The Port Alberni Inlet is alive with sport boats this morning as the Sockeye Sport Fishery opened. The 2010 return of Sockeye back to the Somass River system is expected to be about 700,000 pieces which should make the fishing season for these wonderful tasting salmon run right into August just before the Chinook and Coho Salmon begin to show. The DFO is keeping limits to start the season at 2 salmon per person and a two day limit of 4 in possesion per person.
The weather has been cool so the fish moving into local waters will be relatively high in probably the top 25 to 40 feet of water. We do need a stretch of warm weather on the west coast of B.C.
Most fishermen in the early days will use plenty of color behind the boat (6 flashers) and will troll with mini hootchies in pink or red colors. An mp 15, 2, and 16 will be very popular behind a green or red hotspot flasher. The narrows and the Nahmint-Franklin area will be a popular fishing area for the first few days for local fisher persons. For more information call captain Doug at 1 250 724 2502.
