Fly fishing aboard drift boats in the Somass-Stamp river system has been good for the last 10 days. The river in the upper and lower is full of Coho. There definitely seems to be a lack of Chinook. Drift boat guests have been limiting daily on Coho. A lot of the fish in the river are chrome. The fish have been coming straight up the Port Alberni Inlet from the Ocean. The holding pattern out in Barkley Sound has been strange as most of the Chinook and Coho have stayed in deep water and have continued right into the harbor then up into the river. Guides are using spoons and different colors of wool. At the moment it almost seems that everything we throw out is working well. The Chinook caught out in the Port Alberni Harbor and Inlet are also chrome but have not come into the river for some reason. Fishing in the Somass-Stamp River will continue good through mid November. At the completion of the salmon runs the fall and late summer steelhead will be fabulous also.
