We launched from Durban Harbour at 05h00 and made our way out the harbour mouth, it seemed quite pleasant until we passed the Bluff point and there was a stiff SW wind blowing. The water surface temperature had also dropped significantly and was averaging around 21 deg. C.
We headed South for a while until we were in 30m of water and then turned to run with the wind and headed over no.1 reef and out to 60m where the swells were to big for comfort and I decided to stay closer in shore and so a new course was set for Umdloti and changed to smaller lures for trolling.
There was not much activity around and we only saw 2 birds, and the only fish around where tiny bonnies and salad fish. Once by Umdloti we stopped to try some reef fishing but sea sickness cam upon the boat and so we decided to continue trolling. As we came past Umhlanga the wind picked up more and the sea was like a washing machine.
The highlight of the day was a huge plastic bag which took one of our lures near Umhlanga; it even took line and put a serious bend in the rod.
