Port Alberni B.C. located on beautiful Vancouver Island has had a wonderful taste of winter over the last three weeks. Often rain falls at this time of year but in truth we have had temperatures from minus 12 to plus 2 and some great sunny days with a good amount of snow on the ground. The Stamp River is one of the countrys' most healthy rivers as yearly there are fantastic returns of salmon and steelhead. This fall saw an unbelievable fly fishing season with the Stamp full of Coho and fall (summer) Steelhead. Now the Winter Steelhead are coming full tilt into the system. These fish should continue into mid-March. We are expecting the fishing to be absolutely fantastic. Guides are averaging seven to ten hits per guest per day. There is the tendency of more wild fish than hatchery fish currently in the river. This is often the case in December and early January.
Fresh fish are entering the lower river daily and the water is fairly low. The area below "the bucket" is producing the best results. Guides are predominately using bait and the odd gooey bob. The Upper River is improving daily and spin-n-glos seem to be working best. We are using jet and drift boats to get guests around the river. Being in the river daily we know where the fish are. Fresh fish entering the system tend to begin biting right away even with low water. For more information or for guided trips e-mail Doug at dlindy@shaw.ca
