We were already on our way out of Durban harbour before 06h00 and it was still dark, there was a stiff NW breeze and a slight chop on the water. We proceeded to a bait spot and started to collect some live bait which where in abundance and as the sun came up turning the sky a bright orange, the wind died and all was calm. The water was very warm at 22.8deg. C
I decided to rig one of the Mackerel and sent him out, it was not even 2 minutes and the reel started screaming and we had a battle on our hands for around 15 minutes and as we saw the silver flash in the water which was clear we also saw a large shadow and then the line had a dead weight. We reeled it up and it was the head of a large Yellowfin Tuna which the Shark (Taxman) kindly left us after devouring the balance in one swift bite.
We then landed another 2 not as large, but at least they were complete.
After that we got some huge Eastern Little Tunas and it seemed that the Yellowfin Tuna had left.
By 08h00 there was no further action and we caught no more fish.
Whilst drifting, we had a Whale come within a few meters of the boat and we also saw a large pod of Dolphins swim by.
I weighed the head when I got home and it was 7.14Kg which I estimate came from a 20Kg fish.
