The Port Alberni Inlet is currently quiet for sport fishing. Areas of Barkley Sound however are very good. Sarita Bay and the Nanat Island area have many 8 to 12 pound fish. Most of the feeder chinook are hitting silver coyote spoons on the troll.
The Summer fishing for Barkley Sound and the Port Alberni Inlet looks very promising. Port Alberni has a hatchery locted on the Upper Stamp. The hatchery is the Robertson Creek Hatchery. Forecast is 100,000 chinook and 85,000 coho to return. These numbers are excellent and with returning wild stock and migrating salmon the fishing in Barkley Sound should be quite good all summer. Barkley Sound and The Port Alberni Inlet have very quiet and calm waters. The waters are protected by various islands. Most days there is absolutely no worry to get out on the water. The chinook return this year are predominately 4, 5, and 6 year olds. This means most of the returning chinook will be 20 pounds and better. There should be a good number of fish in the 40 pound range. For more information on fishing and possible accomodation packages e mail Doug of Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing at dlindy@shaw.ca
