Run & Gun
Tampa Bay Bonita Blitz continues! The Bonita schools are thick and slamming bait with a vengeance. These speedsters running 7-15 pounds are a just amazing on light to medium tackle. We were using 20 pound Power Pro with 40pound fluorocarbon leaders tossing Clark spoons. I had one yesterday that was screaming drag I watched in amazement as my Power Pro started to disappear only to have my mono backing knot catch on the braid resulting in a loud snap! Lesson learned when spooling braid ensure the backing line know is smooth. Closer to the Skyway Bridge you will find schools of hungry Mackerel and Jacks use the same tactics and you will find quick action. We found the best way to attack the Bonita was simple we just look for the fish crashing bait of the surface, run the boat right up to casting range and quickly cast. The fish will scatter quickly so its critical you make the first cast count. Double triple headers are common but can be a real mess with tangled lines. Pound for pound Bonita are very impressive game fish. www.onthemarkcharters.com and Capt. Steven also found shark fishing this weekend readily available. Blacktips and several we good not clearly indentify other than a large shadow were in excess of 100 pounds eagerly took any cut bait.
