Nikao Fishing Adventures went down to Inanda Dam South Africa to do some Bass fishing in the afternoon.
We launched at 14h00 and fished until 18h00. There was a stiff breeze blowing from the south west and the water was choppy. Water temperature was 18.1 deg C. The water level at the dam has dropped significantly in the last 2 weeks and all the trees that have been submerged are standing well out of the water. The water is discoloured.
Whilst waiting for my party to arrive I threw a fluke at the few remaining bulrushes next to the slipway and got a lot of chases from some very small Bass and managed to get one rat.
Then we went out and fished some flukes near Conner's Point and did not find any fish near the edges.
We then fished some drop shot at around 6m deep and got 1 keeper sized Bass with a creature bait.
Then we went out to Mamba Point and managed 2 nice sized Bass in the 1-1.2Kg range on Jigs at 7m deep.
I cast out a Tango Dancer at Goats Cliffs and had a big Bass hit the lure, but sadly I missed him.
By this time the sun was setting and we went back to fishing flukes at Perry's and into Donkey Bay and we managed to get 4 keepers and 2 nice fish of 1.2Kg and 1.5Kg.
So 10 fish in total for a 4hr afternoon trip.
Overall I found the fishing tough and we struggled to determine the pattern for the day, but it seems that the fish are holding mostly at around the 6-8m depth and the coming into the shallows to feed. I saw no spawning Bass, but can assume that because they are holding at the 6m depth they are getting ready for the next spawn which should happen in the 2nd week of September.
