We launched at Inanda dam at around 12h00, the water surface temperature was around 27.5 deg. C and there was a light SW wind blowing. At the launch site we saw the baby Zebra up close which is starting to grow nicely; and there was several Fish Eagles and Yellow Billed Kites gliding around the dam. We fished until 18h45.
We proceeded straight across and started fishing the bays left of the cliffs and made our way along this side of the dam towards the river section fishing all the bays. I had expected a deep bite for the day as the barometric pressure was falling, but as always I like to try my luck with topwater first.
It was not very long before we had our first strike and put a decent size Bass on the boat with a Zara Spook being responsible. I tried flukes with no luck and even my trusty Tango Dancer did not produce, and so I went to my favourite, favourite topwater bait which is a Zara Puppy and never looked back, Mike continued with his Zara Spook and Mathew was fishing with a weightless Zero which gave him his new Personal Best. I also got some Bass on a Frog which I threw when ever there was grass.
The wind picked up a little later in the afternoon and the fishing slowed down for a while until the afternoon bite came on and the pattern had changed very little.
Although we never got any huge fish, we did get some decent fish and landed between 25-30 fish for the afternoon, we also probably missed about the same amount. I am proud of Mathew's new PB.
It was really a fun afternoon watching the fish explode on the lures, and it always amazes me how a small Bass will hit a large lure as we landed one Bass which was only slightly larger than the Zara Spook. If this were a competition we would have had a 5 fish bag in excess of 6Kg (13lbs). I love a topwater bite and really enjoyed my afternoon.
