After that nasty SW blow we had come screaming through Plaquemines Parish Thursday night, I was a little skeptical that Friday would be worth fishing. Tornado warnings were posted when Laura Marshall arrived at my house in Myrtle Grove around 8 p.m. to spend the night.
What a surprise when we arrived at Venice Marina on Friday morning to meet up with Capt. Ron Price - The Fish Intimidator. Ron and I had just shared the stage on Thursday morning's Channel 4 WWL-TV Plaquemine's Parish Recovery update. Our Parish President, Billy Nungesser, had requested I go on camera to bring viewers up to date on the status of our fishery. Although it was a lengthy interview, I could have summed it up in one word - FABULOUS!!
Anyway, back to the fishing...My friend Laura came over from Baton Rouge. It's been too long since she and I had the opportunity to get on the water together and we both needed a break so we planned a day that fit both of our schedules and headed out. Our first stop was on the East side downriver where we got into some nice specks and some brusier redfish using MANN'S Mid-Minus crankbaits-black with chartreuse head.
Laura's mid minus kept finding the bottom, old canes and the like. Each time we would retrieve her "lucky lure" and free it or tie it back on after breaking it off. After one such encounter, a line stripping redfish nailed her crankbait and made off with her "lucky lure." Ron gave her another, but she was still in dismay about losing her favorite.
About 10 minutes later I was lying on the deck getting some close up shots while Capt. Ron fought a fish, I spied Laura's lure floating about 30-yards away on the surface. I jumped up, grabbed my rod and cast my Mann's Mid Minus towards the floating lure. Just as my lure was sliding past the floating Mid-Minus, the water exploded as a redfish came up and nailed my crankbait right next to the one I was trying to snag. I guess the red was cruising around looking at the floater when mine "swam" by. Good news is, we retrieved Lauras "lucky" one as well as landed my redfish.
My fish of the day was a 40-pound bruiser that I landed on 6# light tackle using a GULP! shrimp under and Old Bayside Paradise Popper.
It was a wonderful day, and Capt. Ron Price was in his usual top form, not only putting us on trophy fish, but entertaining us and treating us like queens (which of course we ARE!)
Thanks Ron, for showing my guest a great time. We look forward to our next "girl trip" and hopefully Shelley can join us.
