It has been quite awhile since my last post, simply because this past summer has been crazy. Now it is time to catch up on posts and add all of the pictures that I have to my website. On that note, here it goes
I fished the 2nd and 3rd of October with Brian Mendenhall and crew. On Thursday, we got a bit of a late start and judging by the radio chatter, we decided to stay close and play with the grouper. After we managed 5 scamp and 4 gags, we were tired of weeding through the endangered red snapper, so we called it a day and headed for the barn. Friday morning we pulled out earlier than normal since the guys had to be back to the dock early. We cruised all day around 42 and quickly made it to the fishing grounds. After we filled the wells with bait, I eased away and Cletus (deckhand extraordinaire) put the baits out. As Cletus was in the process of putting out the second bait, about a 150lb Blue Marlin ate our first bait and proceeded to put on a show. We fought him for about ten minutes and then unfortunately pulled the hook. After catching two barely keeper yellowfin and probably four or five undersized we made the call to move to another spot. As soon as we arrived at our next spot, the first bait out yielded a decent bull dolphin. After putting some more time in, we landed one more small yellowfin and one about 70lbs. By this time we had to call it quits and head to the barn so the guys could make it home in time for their plans.
On October 10th I had Joey Campo and crew out for a day of tuna fishing. The guys met me at Venice Marina and we pulled out around six o'clock on the 36' Cape Horn. We quickly made it to our first stop and loaded both wells with bait. We fished this spot for a little while but apparently the fish did not want to cooperate. On the way to our second spot, we found a drifting buoy and began to load the boat with dolphin. After we put number 15 in the boat we made the call to carry on our search for some yellowfin. Our next spot did not produce any fish so we moved again. Not long after we arrived at our third spot we saw a few tuna in the hundred pound class busting on some bait. Shortly after we put the baits out, one of the meanest yellowfin I have seen in a log time crushed our bait. After about a two hour fight, we put that tuna in the boat and set the baits out once again. About five minutes later that bait got smashed by an eighty pound class yellowfin. After a short fight we put him in the boat and set the baits out one more time. We soaked them for a little while with no takers and decided to head to the barn since it was now around six o'clock. We made quick work of the ride home since we were cruising around 50.
Ironically, I have a few week days booked in October, but I still have every weekend available in October and also still have some weekends available in November. The fishing right now is very good and there are definitely some big tuna around as long as mother nature will let us make it there.
The lump will be here before we know it and my January and February are beginning to fill up, so if you want your shot at that 200 plus pound yellowfin or some of the best wahoo fishing on the planet give me a call at 504-416-4864 or shoot me an e-mail at voodoosportfishing@yahoo.com. Oh yeah, if you were wondering what I meant about the winter time fishing we have, go to voodoofishingcharters.com and check out the pics of this past winters wahoo bite with our biggest going 94 lbs and our biggest yellowfin going 212.3 lbs. Thanks, Captain Trey Pique.
