So far this winter the fishing has been very good. Wahoo has been the main catch lately, along with plenty of Amberjack and a few blackfin and yellowfin. The big YFT bite that everyone hears about this time of the year is just around the corner. There are plenty of them out there right now, but they are moving around a lot. This week we have temps. that are expected to not get out of the 50's. This is probably the cold spell that we need to get the Tuna in all the right spots and make them stick. It looks like the weather (Wind) will be tough to deal with in the earlier part of the week but will hopefully straighten out by Thursday. Last Thursday we had Gabrielle Wood, his dad, and friends down. This day is a perfect example of how the weather forecasters get it wrong. The forecast for last Thurs. trip was 3-5ft. with a 20kt. west wind. These guys were willing to fish for anything that would bend a rod so if it would have been to rough to get offshore we were going to hit protected water and fish grouper. As we cleared the pass and to our disbelief, it was absolutely slick calm and this opened up all the doors of opportunity. We were able to hit a lot of spots during the day and it paid off. At our first spot we easily put a limit of A.J.'s in the boat, the largest going 50lbs. Then we did a little searching. Finally at the end of the day we hit a wide open wahoo bite. Right after we pulled up we had Tuna, Wahoo, and King Mackerel skying around us. It took us a minute to get into the right path that the fish were feeding in but once we did it was on. We could barely get a bait out without getting smoked by a wahoo. It was one of the best wahoo bites I have seen in a long time. At one point it seemed as if they were following the boat. Our largest went about 70lbs. but they avg. about 45-50lbs. Excellent day on the water. On Fri. Capt. Bob had the Leblanc-Owens, Oreilly group. As good as the bite was on Thurs. it was just the opposite on Fri. They did get a few A.J.'s in the boat but nothing came easy. The weather got us over the weekend with strong east and now north winds. The good news is we are starting to move into big tuna time and the big wahoo will stick around for a while. It is all about the day right now. We still have openings in Jan. and Feb.
